5 Plastic Surgery Myths Debunked by Dr. Nicholas Jones By Dr. Nicholas Jones, Board-Certified Plastic Surgeon
at Nip & Tuck Plastic Surgery

Introduction

Every week, I meet patients in my Atlanta practice who’ve been misled by something they read on social media, something they heard from a friend, or some viral video that they saw on TikTok. Plastic surgery has definitely become more accessible, but MISINFORMATION IS EVERYWHERE—and it often creates fear or false expectations.

I’m here to set the record straight. Here are five of the most common plastic surgery myths I hear, along with the real facts you should know before heading into the OR.

Myth #1: Liposuction is a weight loss solution

Reality: Liposuction isn’t about the scale—it’s about shaping.

Liposuction removes stubborn fat pockets, not pounds. If your goal is to drop 50 pounds, liposuction isn’t the answer. It’s designed for patients near their ideal weight who want to contour areas like the abdomen, flanks, or thighs.

“Think of lipo like sculpting clay—not melting it.”

Myth #2: A flat tummy just takes diet and exercise

Reality: You can’t crunch your way out of loose skin.

Tummy tucks aren’t about laziness—they’re about biology. After pregnancy or major weight loss, you may be left with loose skin and separated muscles (diastasis recti). No amount of planks will fix that. A tummy tuck repairs and tightens your abdominal wall for long-term, visible results.

“If you’ve done the work and still feel stuck—it’s not your fault. It’s your anatomy, and unfortunately, you can’t change it!”

Myth #3: Breast implants must be replaced every 10 years

Reality: If it’s not broken, don’t fix it.

This outdated myth keeps circulating, but today’s implants are safer and longer-lasting. Unless you have complications or want a change, you don’t need to replace them every 10 years. Many patients go 15+ years with no issues. 10 years is the manufacturer's recommendation, and by law they have to have a recommended time of replacement. Regardless if you chose to replace your implants, remember to get your screening mammograms or surveillance study as recommended by your plastic surgeon!

“You only need a replacement if your body—or goals—change.”

Myth #4: Mommy Makeovers require brutal recovery

Reality: Combining surgeries often reduces your overall downtime.

A Mommy Makeover often includes a tummy tuck, liposuction, and breast lift or implants—but that doesn’t mean a nightmare recovery. Most patients feel strong within 2–3 weeks, and with modern pain management, it's very manageable. This may or may not be the right solution for you, but a throughout face to face consultation can aid in setting the exact treatment plan for your desired look.

“One surgery. One recovery. One transformation.”

Myth #5: Non-surgical treatments work just as well as surgery

Reality: They’re great for touch-ups—not transformations.

CoolSculpting, fat-melting injections, and RF skin tightening all have their place—but they don’t replace surgery. These treatments offer subtle changes over time. For dramatic results, like removing loose skin or sculpting a waistline, surgical options are more effective.

“If you need a home renovation, don’t bring a paintbrush—bring a contractor.”
